Since I can't see the gun to examine its condition I can't tell a questioner that his gun is safe to shoot. You are welcome and I have to protect myself and whoever is asking a question about and old shotgun. I too have a Ring Trigger Opening Model in my collection and have no intention of ever attempting to shoot it. Any old shotgun should be inspected by a good competent gunsmith before attempting to shoot it. I looked in a couple of parts catalogs and only one shows any parts at all that one shows no firing pin spring. I also assume you are aware it is not considered safe to shoot the gun with more modern 2 9/16 or 2 3/4 inch shells and certainly not 3 inch or magnum shells loaded with high pressure smokeless powder and steel shot. Also the gun was designed for 2 1/2 inch shells loaded with either black powder or very early low pressure smokeless powder and lead shot. I suspect the locking mechanism is worn and will not hold under the shock of firing. Do you fire more than one shot in a sequence? If so, why do you want to use a single shot? The Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Ring Trigger Opening Model single shot was made between 1902 to 1908 which makes it between 110 and 104 years old.
I've never shot trap and know nothing about it. It's in good condition but in need of some attention. It was my grandmothers shotgun and the only thing I own that was from her.
Not a coil spring like the champion model. I do not want to damage anything but the low value of the gun does not allow a trip to the gun smith. If anyone knows a safe way to remove the main spring in this rare model please let me know the procedure. However I need to disassemble the action to find out. I believe there is yet another missing spring that helps press the ring trigger and hold the barrel shut. Everything worked perfectly except I found the barrel would drop open when the gun was discharged.
The first time this gun has been fired in about 70 years. I then took it to the range to test fire. Anyway, I had to fix the firing pin spring and managed to replace it with a spring from my local hardware store. Mine is the improved model with a spring catch to remove the pin that holds the barrel. It's a fairly rare single barrel break action known as a semi hammer less ring trigger model. I have owned a old Iver Johnson shotgun for years now but decided to fix it up and use it for trap. I'm new here in shotgun world so forgive me if my post has been done before.
